Leona Schmidt, 101, of Sterling died at CountryHouse in Lincoln on Friday, February 3, 2017. She was born May 6, 1915 at Syracuse. She attended a one room country school and was valedictorian of Syracuse High School Class of 1933. She attended Peru State Teachers College for two years and taught five years in a one room country school in Johnson County. She was married to Victor Schmidt on May 27, 1940 at Cook and they lived and farmed near Elk Creek. They also owned and operated a custom combining business. After moving to Sterling in 1948, where they started the Massey Ferguson Dealership, were partners in a John Deere Dealership and Sterling Grain Elevator. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, her vegetable gardens, woodworking and traveling.
Survivors include one daughter, Dianne Weitzenkamp and husband Rog of Dolores, CO; one daughter-in-law, Judi Schmidt of Sterling; three grandchildren, Mark Schmidt and Jennie Schmidt both of Lincoln and Doug Schmidt of Sterling; CountryHouse Staff and Elders. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fritz and Anna Delekat Wiechmann; her husband Victor, who died February 26, 2007; three sons, Donald, Darrell and Duwane Schmidt; one daughter, Donita Swenson and her husband Len; one grandson, Tim Schmidt.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 6, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Burial will be in the Sterling Cemetery of Sterling. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. at the church on Monday. A memorial has been established to the family’s choice with Shannon and Erma Hazen in charge. The body will lie in state at the Zink-Fox Funeral Home of Sterling from 12:00 noon to 8:00 P.M.
